  Basic Patterns

Shakers:
The shakers fall silent for most breaks and come back in  after any tam/ entrada,  or right away if there isn't one.
There are exceptions:

You can hear the original Fanfarra on the Carlinos Brown and Serghio Mendes album 'Brasileiro'.

Each section is call-and-response, usually repeated twice. Here are phrases that Rick Lazar uses for some of the sections:

From Rick Lazar of the Samba Squad, we got the convention that you add five to the number of fingers the mestre holds up, if he/she holds them in front of his/her face.

So, for break #6, the signal is one finger in front of the face (5+1=6). This became known as the 'unibrow' break.

Signal: Make a big 'wave' sign, 4 apito whistles.

• Everyone:'Spot' finish; shakers & caixas continue.
• Surdos: Bom-Bim (primeira/segunda, pickup and first beat only). Repeat 9 times. It ties in with the rest of the instruments, so I suggest you learn the break, and don't count 9 times.
• Tamborims, repenique & agogós do 3-2 clave. Agogós play 3-2 clave as: lo, lo, lo, hi-hi. Repeat 4 times.
• 'Spot' finish - everyone stops.
• Tamborims do entrada syncopated variant: (Blueberry, blueberry, blueberry, blueberry muffin etc - to be completed).
