A batucada with many breaks - at times we've had 17 breaks in this piece! "Ano Novo" = "New Year"; named for our gigs with Jesse Cook, New Year's Eve at the NAC, Ottawa. So we learned quite a few of these from Rick Lazar of the Samba Squad. Others are very traditional, stretching way back - e.g. at least to the 'Brasileiro" album by Sergio Mendes & Carlinhos Brown. And some breaks are our own invention.
The entradas, breaks and finishes are described individually with audio and/or video where possible, but the longer audio tracks and videos near the end also have a list of which breaks happen when.
Breaks currently not in the repertoire are at the foot of the page.
Breaks are signalled by hand, then usually either called in with a reqenique chamada, or by the apito.
There is usually a primeira pickup prior to the main pattern starting/re-starting.

Wave Break | No pickup |
Break #3 | Two boom-booms from Primeira |
Mozart 250 | None between 'dup, dee-dup ' etc and the basic samba double pickup between 'boom-boom didddly' stuff and basic samba |
Shakers:
The shakers fall silent for most breaks and come back in after any tam/ entrada, or right away if there isn't one.
There are exceptions:
Wave Break | Continue normally after the 'waiting ..' Stop for the rep. chamada (after final 'waiting ...') Restart after the tam. entrada |
Sapucai | Stop after the initial rep. chamada Restart for the one pattern of basic samba Stop Restart after the 'waiting ...' and primeira pickup |
Mozart 250 | Stop for the funny bits Restart for the basic samba |
You can hear the original Fanfarra on the Carlinos Brown and Serghio Mendes album 'Brasileiro'.
Each section is call-and-response, usually repeated twice. Here are phrases that Rick Lazar uses for some of the sections:

Listen to Ano Novo Break #5
From Rick Lazar of the Samba Squad, we got the convention that you add five to the number of fingers the mestre holds up, if he/she holds them in front of his/her face.
So, for break #6, the signal is one finger in front of the face (5+1=6). This became known as the 'unibrow' break.
Signal: Four apito blasts with one finger on forehead
Ano Novo - Unibrow break - Vankleek Hill May 2010 (3.2MB wmv):
Signal: Three fingers in front of face
da - rep

This break is named after the street in Rio by the sambadromo, where the carnaval competition takes place.
The break is taken from the Enredo Liberdade, Liberdade, by Imperatriz Leopoldinense.
